Counseling Services is committed to supporting student mental health while responding to the current global pandemic.  Out of an abundance of caution and care, Counseling Services is offering services remotely by phone and HIPAA-compliant Zoom (based on student preference).

Mission Statement

Cal Poly Counseling Services promotes the development of holistic student emotional health.  As mental health professionals, we serve the campus community through advocacy and the provision of confidential, accessible services.


Message from Counseling Services

Welcome Cal Poly students! We are happy you have chosen to take a step toward your emotional health and wellbeing.  We are here to help you develop and maintain the skills integral to mental health through hands-on workshops; individual, couples and group therapy; crisis intervention; consultations with parents, faculty, staff; and mental health trainings.

Counseling Services is staffed by licensed mental health professionals with graduate degrees in clinical and counseling psychology.  We work with a range of students from different cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds; students who want to talk about anxiety, poor academic performance, traumatic experiences, suicidal thoughts, substance use, or anything else that might be going on for them.  Rather than advice-giving, we offer a particular kind of listening (called "active listening") and an expertise in human development, along with strategies to support your personal, social, and emotional growth. You might be surprised how much talking with a professional can help. Our services are free, confidential, and available to all currently enrolled students. We look forward to working with you.


Getting Started at Counseling Services

If you are a student in crisis, come in to Counseling Services and you will be assessed immediately during normal business hours.  If you meet criteria for a crisis appointment, you will be seen within a few hours. If you are in crisis after normal business hours, please call us at 805-756-2511 (main line) and select option “2” to be immediately transferred to a live person with whom you can discuss your concerns.

Any enrolled student may contact Counseling Services at 805-756-2511 during normal business hours to schedule an Initial Consultation. At the initial appointment, we will review your current situation and determine how best to meet your needs, either through short term individual, couples, group counseling or a referral off campus. Self-care tips while you are waiting for your first appointment.

If the Initial Consultation provider determines that you would benefit from counseling requiring a specific expertise not available at our center, we will work with you to find local counselors with the necessary expertise who accept your insurance plan or who provide low cost services.  You can always check our Community Referral list here.

After completing the Initial Consultation, many students are referred to one of our Emotional Wellbeing Workshops, an innovative series specifically created to provide quick and useful tools without overburdening the busy schedules of Cal Poly students. At the completion of any of these 3-week, 1-hour skills-based workshops, you have the opportunity to meet with your Initial Consultation provider to review your experience and collaboratively discuss the next steps in your change process. 

We also offer Let's Talk on Fridays from 10:15am - Noon and 2:15 - 4:00 pm at YTT 172H-130.  Let's Talk is a drop-in service that offers informal, confidential consultations with a counselor.  Students are seen on a first come, first served basis.

Because Counseling Services is funded by student fees, there are no additional charges at the time of service. 


Eligibility For Services

  • Currently enrolled Cal Poly students (graduate and undergraduate)
  • Students who have chosen not to enroll for Summer Quarter, but were registered in the previous Spring Quarter and are registered for the following Fall Quarter
  • For couples counseling, all partners must be currently enrolled Cal Poly students

Cal Poly Counseling Services is Accredited by the International ACCREDITATION of Counseling Services (iacs)
